 2023 Preview

Mountain Brook completed the 2022 season with a 12-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region five, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Spartans won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 6A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Saraland at the Alabama Super Seven 38-17 in Auburn.

The 566 points scored by the Spartans last year were a team record in a single season.

Over the past two seasons the Spartans have Finished 24-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Mountain Brook has gone a combined 116-44. Their 72.5% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Mountain Brook has finished a combined 224-83. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 6A and 25th in the AHSAA. The Spartans have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Spartans are led by head coach Chris Yeager who is entering his eighteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 145-61 over the past seventeen seasons at Mountain Brook. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Yeager. His 170 wins rank 23rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Yeager's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times and won four region championships.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Mountain Brook has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Spartans enter the season with expectations of not only a region crown but will be contending for a trip to the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region five and could very well be representing the North in the Class 6A title game. The Spartans have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2015 and this year should be no exception.

Cole Gamble will be back this season at running back after rushing for 2,510 yards as a junior in 2022.

Clark Sanderson will also be back at the wide receiver position on offense.

The Spartans open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Vestavia Hills on Thursday, August 24 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Vestavia Hills Rebels finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in fourth place in Class 7A region three. The Rebels lost in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs to Thompson by a score of 21-12.

Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills have met a total of 58 times on the football field. The Spartans have a 28-30-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2022 with Mountain Brook winning by a score of 24-14.

Mountain Brook lost 6A All-State  offensive lineman Davis Peterson to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Trent Wright.

The Spartans return 6A All-State Senior running back Cole Gamble. He was named to the first team last season. The Spartans also return Senior receiver Clark Sanderson. He was named to the honorable mention team.
